Hey, I’m proud of you. Allantoin isn’t one of those super-trendy skincare buzzwords you hear about all the time (if I hear the words “hyaluronic acid” one more time…), so the fact that you’re reading this right now says that you’re taking the time to research what you put on your face, and that warms my skincare-obsessed heart. Allantoin isn’t necessarily the most exciting skin ingredient, but by the end of this article, I know you’re gonna be excited to try it, and here’s why: Michele Farber, MD, board-certified dermatologist, says allantoin is a multitasking ingredient that helps hydrate, exfoliate, and soothe the skin. How many ingredients do you know of that can do all three?! Told you you’d get excited. Now, let’s get into it and find out more about the ingredient (after some quick product recs, of course).

1

Best Barrier Cream with Allantoin

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

  • Contains eucalyptus oil, which can be irritating

Another favorite of Dr. Farber’s for its ability to soothe sensitive skin, this barrier cream contains colloidal oatmeal, in addition to allantoin, to protect and restore the skin barrier (which is basically the outer layer of your skin that keeps you protected).

THE REVIEWS: “Seriously, unreal,” writes one customer. “Clears up eczema flares in a day. If I could afford it, I would bathe in it.”

2

Best Retinol Cream With Allantoin

SkinBetter Science AlphaRet Overnight Cream

  • Not much product for the price

Where do we start?! This retinol cream is one of Dr. Farber’s overall favorites for many, many reasons. “It is a tolerable retinol that is fantastic for anti-aging and has allantoin to soothe,” Dr. Farber says. But Dr. Farber is not the only fan. Below, a product review to back it up.

THE REVIEWS: “This is hands down the best retinol I’ve ever used,” deputy beauty director Lauren Balsamo previously wrote for Cosmo’s 2019 Skin Awards. “It’s incredibly effective (I mean last week, a friend told me I’m ‘basically poreless’) and doesn’t make my skin even the slightest bit red or flaky like most retinol products do.”

3

Best Protective Balm With Allantoin

Honest Beauty Calm & Heal Melting Balm

  • Thick texture that melts into the skin
  • Has a slight medicinal scent

Dr. Lal says although this moisturizer would be safe for all skin types, it’s especially ideal for “patients who have dry, flaky skin and want to have hydrated, supple skin.” It applies like a thick balm but melts into a thin shield to protect your skin from the harsh elements.

THE REVIEWS: “I put the hydrogel cream under this at night and my skin is still moisturized in the morning,” one reviewer writes. “I have yet to find a product that can do that for my very dry skin.”

4

Best Face and Body Lotion With Allantoin

Vivant Skin Care Allantoin Sedating Hydrating Lotion

  • Perfect weight for fall and spring

Another top pick for Dr. Lal, this allover lotion uses a combo of grapeseed oil, allantoin, and aloe vera to moisturize and soothe your skin. It won’t leave behind any weird, sticky residue, so feel free to slather this one from your face to your feet.

THE REVIEWS: “This is such a light but nourishing moisturizer,” reads one review. “It’s completely versatile, so it can be used on your entire body, a.m. and p.m. I would definitely recommend all year round!”

5

Best Calming Cream for Senstive Skin

Cetaphil Soothing Gel Cream with Aloe

“This is an affordable product I love for patients after they get chemical peels,” Dr. Lal says. “It’s also great for patients after a sunburn.” Dr Lal’s pro tip: Leave this gel cream, which contains allantoin, shea, and aloe, in the fridge and use it at bedtime to soothe your skin after a long hot day.

THE REVIEWS: “I had skin irritation after shaving and used a dab of the cream on the affected area,” wrote one reviewer. “Not only did it provide soothing relief, but it helped calm and treat the redness. By the next morning, my skin looked good.”

6

Best Lightweight Moisturizer With Allantoin

Chemist Confessions Aquafix Oil-Free Water Gel

  • Hard to tell when you’re running low

Your parched skin will slurp up this oil-free, water-based moisturizer that’s full of humectants to pull in the water your skin needs. It also contains allantoin, centella asiatica extract, and panthenol to soothe your skin—perfect for using with your powerful actives.

THE REVIEWS: “The lightweight, non-tacky texture hydrates efficiently on its own and layers nicely if my skin needs a little extra. I appreciate the lack of fragrance and the ergonomic pump.”

7

Best Face Mask for Oily Skin

SheaMoisture African Black Soap Clarifying Mud Mask

Your oily skin is no match for this clay mask. Ingredients like tea tree oil, kaolin clay, and willow bark extract help clear clogged pores that cause breakouts, while a mix of allantoin, shea, and panthenol counteract the potentially drying effects.

THE REVIEWS: “I have been using this for over 6 months now and I can swear by this product!” said one happy customer. “Although I use it only once or twice a week, I have seen the change in my skin and it has become increasingly less oily overall.”

8

Best Exfoliating Mask With Allantoin

PEACH & LILY Super Reboot Resurfacing Mask

  • Slight tingling sensation

Allantoin combined with the AHAs and BHAs in this exfoliating mask tackle dullness and rough skin texture without destroying your skin in the process. I’ve been there. It’s no fun. But plenty of happy customers say that’s not the case with this formula.

THE REVIEWS: One review wrote, “Since using this, it has improved my skin tone, texture, and helped in pore reduction. I use this twice a week and the great thing is that it gets rid of the surface dead skin cells while also exfoliating at the inner level.”

9

Best Allantoin Gel for Improving Scars

SkinCeuticals Advanced Scar Control

One of Dr. Lal’s favorite uses for allantoin is to treat scarring, and we think this is one scar gel worth checking out. Made for all types of scars, from burns to scrapes to surgical incisions, this gel uses silicones, allantoin, and fatty acids to protect the skin while it heals.

THE REVIEWS: “Magic for facial dermatitis,” reads one review. “I have been searching for almost 2 years for something to bring relief to horrible disfiguring dermatitis and subsequent scarring. I’ve found a lot of things that help, but this is a game changer. I use it generously on my entire face. Improvement was significant after one week of use. Allantoin and dimethicone rule.”

10

What does allantoin do to the skin?

“Allantoin is useful for hydration, soothing the skin, and also has keratolytic properties to remove excess dead skin cells,” explains Dr. Farber. “While allantoin is generally helpful in all skin types, it is most useful for sensitive, inflamed, or irritated skin.” Dr. Lal adds that allantoin is a great moisturizing exfoliant, which means it’s especially beneficial for those with sensitive skin who are scared to use more potent exfoliators.

11

Is allantoin good for acne scars?

Yup, allantoin is good for acne scars. In fact, Dr. Lal loves allantoin for patients of all skin colors and types with newer acne scars but adds that it can be beneficial for lots of other scars as well, like keloids, traumatic scars, and even post-procedure scars (from lasers, chemical peels, etc). “Allantoin is a skincare multipurpose ingredient that is popularly known for its benefit in scar gels,” says Dr. Lal. “It is great for healing scars because it stimulates normal cell turnover without drying the skin.”

12

How to choose the best product with allantoin

First, decide what skin concern you’re aiming to address

If you can’t tell by the wide range of products above, allantoin is one of those ingredients that plays nicely with others and gets invited to everyone’s parties. Decide if you’re trying to use allantoin to soothe your skin, moisturize, exfoliate, or improve a scar, then find a product that uses additional ingredients to address your main concern.

Read the ingredients label

Dr. Lal says allantoin can be used with other ingredients without a problem, even BHAs, AHAs, and retinoids, so you don’t have to worry about spacing out your allantoin products within the rest of your routine. But you will want to make sure that your skin can tolerate all the other ingredients in the formula you choose. A few products above contain ingredients that might be fine for some people but potentially sensitizing for others, like essential oils, for instance. Make sure the entire ingredient label works for you.
